MTV Europe Awards to celebrate fall of Berlin wall

This year’s 16th Annual MTV European Music Awards was once again held in Berlin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. The event commenced with a short performance by the legendary band U2, who played at the Brandenburg Gate. The tickets for the show were sold free online. The short concert saw 10,000 very excited, fans hear the band play songs such as “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” “Magnificent” and “One”.

The EMA’s also include performances from the Foo Fighters, Shakira and Leona Lewis and Beyounce to name a few. The event was hosted by Katy Perry, who bought quirkiness and humor to the show. Katy’s costumes were inspired by Burlesque and the 1930’s Berlin movie Cabaret. The event opened with an energetic performance from Green day, who then won the award for Best Live Act.The major winner of the night was Beyonce, who won three awards for best song, female and video. While her hubby jay-z took away an award for Best Urban. Tokio hotel a German group took away an award for Best group. Meanwhile Lady Gaga was honored for Best Act for the year and Placebo won Best Alternative. The newest category of awards for best world performance and Push act was won by Linkin Park and Pixie Lott.

The event’s successes was an indication of the journey Berlin had taken and a glimpse at the country it has now become, which is one of freedom, change, and diversify.
